After an emotional reunion with the family of Stephen Gately, his devastated partner Andrew Cowles has returned to London with the ashes of the Boyzone singer, I can reveal.
Andrew paid a visit to Stephen’s parents on Friday at their Dublin home, where many tears were shed.
I’m told Andrew’s struggling to cope in the aftermath of Stephen’s untimely death and decided to spend some time with the star’s parents, Margaret and Tony, before returning to sort his head out in London.
My source reveals: “He jetted in and out on Friday. It was a quick trip but he wanted to have some time with Stephen’s parents to talk.
“He’s promised to keep in touch with them both and feels so much happier knowing they are as well as can be expected.
“Collecting Stephen’s ashes has helped the reality of the tragic events settle in somewhat.”

Meanwhile Andrew is receiving some much-needed support from Little Britain star Matt Lucas.
Both are mourning the loss of loved ones and Andrew has spent time talking to Matt, 35, as well as sharing a dinner with him earlier this week.
Matt has been inconsolable over the loss of his ex-husband Kevin McGee, 32, after his suicide a few weeks ago.
My source adds: “Matt wants to make sure Andrew’s alright.”
And it’s not just Matt that’s swooping in to help. Sir Elton John and David Furnish – the pair that introduced Andrew to Stephen in the first place – have been a huge support.
The source adds: “Elton and David have been checking up on him constantly.”
My heart goes out to Andrew – stay strong.

Boyzone’s record label, Polydor, has lodged an official complaint to the Press Complaints Commission over a column in the Daily Mail regarding Stephen Gately’s death.

The move comes after Jan Moir’s article, which branded the late singer’s passing as “strange, lonely and troubling”, attracted more than 25,000 complaints – the most ever made about a single newspaper article.

The PCC has written to the newspaper for its response to the complaints, but it is still to deciding whether a full investigation should be launched, reports The Guardian.

So far, no complaint has also been received from Gately’s family, the band or individual members.

Moir’s article, published the day before Gately’s funeral in Dublin (October 16), attracted angry comments on social networking sites and blogs.

She wrote: “Whatever the cause of death is, it is not, by any yardstick, a natural one. Let us be absolutely clear about this. All that has been established so far is that Stephen Gately was not murdered.

“As a gay rights champion, I am sure he would want to set an example to any impressionable young men who may want to emulate what they might see as his glamorous routine.

“For once again, under the carapace of glittering, hedonistic celebrity, the ooze of a very different and more dangerous lifestyle has seeped out for all to see.”

Moir later made a statement defending her column, saying it was not her intention to offend, blaming a “heavily orchestrated internet campaign” for the furore and adding that it was “mischievous in the extreme to suggest that my article has homophobic and bigoted undertones”.

Stephen Gately (right), a member of the Irish boyband Boyzone, has been found dead in a hotel room in Majorca while on vacation. He was 33:

“A close friend said it appeared Stephen died after going out in Majorca, where he was on holiday. ‘It looks like he went out for a few drinks, then got back, fell asleep and never woke up,’ the pal said. Early this morning Boyzone manager Louis Walsh told us: ‘We’re all absolutely devastated. I’m in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don’t know much about what’s happened yet.’ …All four remaining members of Boyzone – who recently reunited – will be flying to Palma, Majorca tomorrow. Boyzone star Shane Lynch said: ‘Me and the boys are flying out in the morning. We just need to get over to where he’s passed and work out what we need to do.’”

The details behind Gately’s death have not emerged. He is survived by Andy Cowles (above, left), whom he married in a civil partnership in 2006. Cowles was featured with Gately in the band’s video for “Better” in 2008.
